"upcoming"はTOEIC本試験でupcomingかもしれない

 獨協大学の皆さん、こんにちは。以下、昨日の授業のフォローアップ情報です。英語で書いちゃいましたが、ぜひリラックスして読んでください(獨協生以外の方へ:ちょっぴり『TOEICテスト新公式問題集〈Vol.3〉』のネタバレが含まれます)。

Yesterday was the third class of the term, and we learned Part 6 攻略法. In the first week we did Part 5, and I introduced Part 7 last week. We are using 『TOEICテスト新公式問題集〈Vol.3〉』. Now, are you noticing something?

Well, there may be a lot of things, but one thing I want to mention is the following word: "upcoming." "Upcoming" means "happening soon." For example, if you say "my upcoming exam," you will be taking it very soon, maybe within a week or so.

Now, this word keeps appearing at various places in 『TOEICテスト新公式問題集〈Vol.3〉』. Just on Test 1, the 空欄 of Q108 in Part 5 is preceded by "upcoming." Also, the first sentence of the passage on page 52 of Part 6 contains the expression "the upcoming Gardner Theater Series." This actually provides an important hint for the 時制問題 that follows, although I didn't mention it because there was a more obvious clue. Additionally, one of the choices for Q153 of Part 7 includes "upcoming."

What do you think of this? Is the ETS doing it on purpose? I doubt it. Then are they too lazy to avoid repeating the same word? The answer to this question is No, too, I believe.

One feature of the TOEIC is that it contains a lot of English. One test is two hours, and you listen to and read a great amount of the language in such a short period of time. Consequently, it is unavoidable to repeat some basic vocabulary.

If you notice the same word repeated time and again, that's a good sign. That vocabulary item is probably important, and you should learn it. But you can't master anything on your first try. If you try to memorize things at once, you may forget most of them sooner or later. But that's OK, because they will show up again if they are important. "Upcoming" is one such word. You may find it on the next TOEIC, too!

You are privileged to be a student of 獨協大学, as it provides intensive English education. You are taking other English courses besides mine, right? After the Golden Week, try to see if words you've learned in my TOEIC course appear in your other courses. Those are the ones that are important, and you should learn them.

By the way, I arrived a little early yesterday, so I wanted to go to 学食. I found カフェテリア on the map, so I went there. It's on the first floor of 天野貞祐記念館. However, it wasn't exactly 学食, but more like a coffee chop. I was only able to have a bagel to fill my stomach. I think there must be a 学食 somewhere else, and I want to try it next time.
